Big news, as Scoble hinted earlier today on his blog, from the Office team. There are reports lighting up all over
the net about the announcement tonight that Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files will use a new XML format that will be
usable by both the current Office 2003 (aka 11) and the next-generation Office 12. The new file extensions are .docx,
.xlsx, and .pptx. Here are some essential links:

3. I hate to sound like the party pooper as usual but this is not big news. What implications does this really have? We know Office has had XML support in version 2003. Was it widely used? Not at all. How will it be any different in Office 12? If anything, they've added yet a new hurdle because now developers have to deal with a ZIP file structure. Of course it can be done programmatically, but it's not nearly as easy as just creating an XML doc. So again, we're back to where we already are today. I can send you a .doc file that contains XML and if you have Office 2003, you'll be able to open it.
I wish Robert had not hyped this up so much and I can't understand why people are eating this up like they've just split the atom or landed on Mars.
