Over at Ars Technica, Adam Baratz has put together a very extensive review of five of the most popular free desktop search tools with a welcome focus - usability and interface. He reviews the following tools:
-
Google Desktop Search
-
Copernic Desktop Search
-
MSN Toolbar Suite
-
Yahoo! Desktop Search
-
Ask Jeeves Desktop Search
Baratz picks the MSN search tool as his current favorite but offers some well-considered pros and cons to consider about each to help you decide which might best fit your needs. An excellent piece of work. Premium subscribers to Ars Technica can download the report as a PDF.

1. I thought it was a well written piece as well. I personally like the Copernic tool the best. It searches Thunderbird (why I don't like MSN as much) and has the interface that works the best for me. Google's use of the browser to display results just isn't as effective as the interface Copernic uses.
