2. Nope. It's a special bonus tutorial. You have to be a subscriber to get the tutorials. It's a real bargain since the subscription price is... free!

3. You can get the bonus tutorials by any of three methods:

1) Subscribe to the email newsletter
2) Install Issue Manager sofwtare from our site (software that tells you when we publish new mags)
3) Install to the RSS feed, or constantly visit our news section on the site.

All of them are, as Marc says, free. What we don't do is publsih the bonus tutorials on the main site - they are, after all, a bonus for our most loyal readers.

Incidentally, a terrible oversight on my part - PhotoFiltre should have got an award too. I think Marc did a piece on this software too (which made me gansh my teeth when I read it as he beat me to publishing the review ;-) ). It really is excellent, though the fact it is only for home users, not commercial use, is strange.

And, as I said on the news section of our site, I reckon Paint.NET will get one when it is updated, because it's only a few oversights that stopped it this time.

I was genuinely surprised at the quality - getting four took some searching (there are some lesser image editors out there) - but these are great, I think.

5. I did download Issue Manager, so I could get the bonus tutorials. Perhaps a tablet specific tutorial could be published in the future.

Either way, I had Paint.NET on mine for awhile, and didn't consider it really an image editing software, more like the original MSPaint. Didn't like the package much though.

I decided on The GIMP due to the ease of operation. I most appreciate the fact that it doesn't take 20 seconds to load like Photoshop does. Nothing on IrfanView's website convinced me to download it over The Gimp. What with DiMage Viewer, Picasa 2, Hello, ArtRage, and Photoshop being on there already, I don't need that much bloat. (Photoshop is leaving).

6. No, Justin, you're right, as I said in the article, the only full-on image editor in there is The GIMP, which continues to improve with each version. However, Photo.NET and PhotoFiltre are great improvements on Paint, which is what we were looking for. IrfanView, on the other hand, is a great halfway house, for improved viewing and quick editing.

7. I'm unsure why IrfanView is listed as an image editor. The last time I checked I could not draw on pictures or use layers; only crop, resize, and save as another type (and view since I refuse to use Internet Explorer view my pictures). I would hardly consider it an image editor. More like an image viewer and converter (both are done beautifully!) ACDSee has closer to what is advertised as far as an image editor and viewer in one. My only gripe with ACDSee is that on unintstall it leaves a huge mess to clean up in the registry- broken file associations and whatnot. Not a problem if you don't uninstall it anyway.

GIMP doesn't quite feel right to me so I use GIMPshop instead. However, I'm looking for a solution to run from my JumpDrive, since I periodically am away from my home and would like to be able to work on stuff without having to install a program on someone else's computer. PhotoFiltre looks very sleek and is quite compact, but what I need is something with layers to go with it in a small enough package to install to a JumpDrive.
