1. Another option is to add the desktop toolbar to your startbar. If you drag it all to the right, it only shows the toolbar name and the chevron sign to indicate there is more. By clicking on the chevron sign, you can view your desktop shortcuts in a list. In addition, in this way you get quick access to the entire contents of your different drives, without opening the file explorer.

2. I've been using a program that does the same thing for a long time now. It's called "AutoSmall". It will automatically change the "view" of your desktop based on a user defined threshold of desktop items.

3. I have the desktop toolbar on my taskbar, but I removed all labels and keep it stretched out. Basically, I use it as a better Quick Launch toolbar.

4. You mention that you file stuff away, so you don't need it. I am the same way, I file stuff away so my desktop is very clean. However, I think this utility adds to that minimalist approach. Just having a few icons in the upper left hand corner, and very small, cleans my desktop up even further.

6. The one problem I've found is that if you're not so rigorous at cleaning your desk, sometimes the columns get too tight, and leftmost items obscure those on the right. This was frustrating enough for me to ditch this app.
